Dementia oftentimes serves as a barrier of connection between a loved one and their caregiver. Getting over this barrier and tackling this "Hump of Engagement" is crucial for therapeutic breakthroughs. We've found that there are three therapeutic techniques that can be used to aid in breaking down this barrier on track to building meaningful connections:

Physical Touch
Due to the shortened "bandwidth" of attention that dementia patients have available, it is crucial to engage with as many senses possible. Holding the hand of a dementia patients while talking is a great way to establish a stronger connection.
Rhythmic Engagement
Since emotional memories are rooted rhythmically in the brain, actively engaging with the rhythm of a familiar tune effectively activates parts of the brain affected by the disease. This therapeutic intervention may also have the ability to unlock some "buried" memories!
Community Engagement
Holding on to a sense of self and responsibility is extremely important for dementia patients! These feelings can aid in the ability for them to form genuine connections. This can be attained by group engagement activities and a strong feeling of communical support.
